Irvon form 170mm thick cylinder for new test facility at the UK New and Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) in Blythe, Northumberland.
The cylinder, 6 metres in diameter and 170mm thick was so large that it needed to be made in 3 parts to allow transportation is to be used in a new £15 million facility designed to test Offshore Turbine Blades up to 100 metres in length.
Irvon used machinery that was part funded by a grant from regional development agency, Advantage West Midlands in 2010. Until this time the part could not have been manufactured in the UK and would have needed to be imported from Europe.
Andy Kimberley, Irvon managing director, said “we are delighted to be involved in the project which will be the largest of its kind in the word” adding “Irvon are very much aware of issues of global warming and have become the first company of its kind in the UK to be accredited to the environmental standard BS EN14001.”
