Shearing

Cut steel up to 8.2m long in a single stroke, without twist

Here at Irvon we have the largest operational steel shear in the UK. This guillotine can cut up to 8.2m in a single stroke and can cut narrow stips, e.g. 50mm, without twist – producing consistent flat profiles from coil or plate.

The machine is programmed according to the type of material being cut, tensile strength and thickness. The CNC control then optimises the blade gap and rake angle of the blade to give the best cut quality, edge quality and accuracy. Due to this fine control, we can cut 0.9 to 13mm in carbon steel.

A unique torsion control feature is employed when cutting long and narrow strips. This supports both sides of the cut preventing twist, even on narrow strips and means that we can produce sheared edge flats in unusual grades and non-standard sizes or lengths.

With such large pieces of metal it is important that is it is handled safely, and without scratching or contaminating stainless steels. We have a range of specialist lifting equipment for this purpose.
