When you need weld preps, countersunk holes, small holes, or tapping in your parts, it would be usual to cut the parts and then send them out for a secondary process—machining, drilling, grinding, countersinking, or tapping. These secondary processes add substantial cost, not to mention the transport and time required. Machining, in particular, is very costly, and 90% of the time, the machining-level tolerances are over the top. Only at Irvon can you get these processes cut with our high-powered fibre laser machine directly onto the parts, keeping production time and cost down and all under one roof.
For example, drilling, countersinking and grinding Hardox, in particular, is very demanding. Many of these common processes that work on traditional steel cannot be done on Hardox, take much more time, or can only be done in a much more limited fashion. Our most recent investment in fibre laser and beveling technology takes the headache out of these tasks. Your parts, whether steel, aluminium or stainless can be laser cut up to 50mm thick and up to 12m x 3m in size. The laser head will also tilt to cut any common chamfers and weld preps onto the edges of the part, cut countersunk holes by rotating and cut small holes that wouldn’t normally be possible without drilling. For example, it will cut good quality 5mm diameter holes in 40mm thick stainless. Through our own in-house development, we have programs for all materials that cut with low heat and create only a limited heat-affected zone. Drilling and tapping laser-cut edges is now possible, saving even more time.
The most major cost reduction is replacing machining. As you may well know, machining is notoriously expensive and time-intensive. Laser cutting can produce tolerances of ±0.25, which is more than enough for weld preparations. These are very common and found on profiles, pressed sections and rolled cylinders. Our machine can cut single V, double V, Y, and K preps with noses for full penetration and partial penetration welds.
